## Overview

Learn about basic storage and warehousing of materials, supplies, furnishings, and equipment used in federal agencies. Become proficient as a warehousing manager and as a member of the property management team for the life-cycle management of personal property. Receive valuable information on the complex responsibility of warehousing, inventory management, and the disposal process.

## Curriculum

#### Module 1: Warehouse Basics

- Define the purpose of warehouses and their different types, such as raw material storage, work-in-process, finished goods, and distribution warehouses.
- Understand the critical role of warehouses in the supply chain and how they contribute to product flow and inventory management.
- Examine key elements of warehouse design, including layout, storage systems, and workflow, to ensure efficient operations.

#### Module 2: How Are We Doing and How Do We Know?

- Understand the importance of objectively measuring warehouse performance.
- Learn key tools and techniques to measure performance.
- Choose the most important aspects of warehouse performance to measure.

#### Module 3: Improving Warehouse Operations and Automation

- Identify specific areas within warehouse operations that need improvement and recognize the value of incremental improvements.
- Learn about warehouse automation systems and how they can streamline operations to increase efficiency and reduce manual labor.
- Understand the process of assessing opportunities for automation and applying appropriate technologies for warehouse management.

#### Module 4: Warehouse Profiling

- Understand the concept of warehouse profiling, which involves analyzing and documenting warehouse operations to identify improvement areas.
- Learn how to develop a warehouse profile by collecting and analyzing data on activities such as receiving, storing, and shipping materials.
- Examine how profiling can be used to make informed decisions on space utilization, process improvement, and inventory management.

#### Module 5: Warehouse Slotting

- Define warehouse slotting.
- Understand the importance of slotting to increase warehouse performance.
- Develop a slotting tree to optimize inventory storage and improve the overall efficiency of the warehouse.

#### Module 6: Receiving

- Understand the receiving process, including the steps involved in inspecting and validating incoming goods to ensure accuracy and quality.

- Explore the handling of hazardous materials during the receiving process, including safety measures and legal requirements.

#### Module 7: Warehousing and Storage Management

- Understand aspects of warehousing, including utilization of space, locator systems, warehouse management systems, and material handling equipment.
- Understand storage management—types, space requirements, floor plans, and storage aids.

#### Module 8: Managing the Physical Inventory Process

- Understand the components of effective management of a physical inventory.
- Learn about types of physical inventories.
- Understand the importance of security in managing a physical inventory.
- Learn how to conduct a warehouse inventory.

#### Module 9: Property Disposal

- Learn about the process of property disposal.
- Understand shipping and packaging.

#### Module 10: Occupational Safety and Health Programs

- Understand the importance of occupational safety and health programs in warehouse operations.
- Learn about safety regulations, hazard identification, and risk management to ensure a safe working environment for warehouse staff.
- Examine the role of warehouse managers in implementing and enforcing safety protocols and accident prevention measures.

## Instructors

### Frank Borrelli — Instructor

Frank recently retired as Emeritus Administrator from California State University Stanislaus where he was employed for over 36 years. After various promotions through the years, he served as the Director of Support Services which encompasses Property Control, Shipping and Receiving, Surplus Property and Sales, Records Management, Mail Services and the Print Shop. He has over 40 years’ experience in logistics, material handling and asset management. During his career, he worked for E&J Gallo Winery and attended Modesto Jr. College and CSU Stanislaus studying Business Production and Operations Management.

Frank has been a member of NPMA since 1993 and received his CPPM Certification with the National Property Management Association in 2007. In 2016, Frank received the “Andrew C. Anderson Lifetime Achievement Award” for recognition of Lifelong Commitment, Dedication and Contributions to NPMA He is currently serving as the Treasurer and Director of Chapter Support and Professional Development for the Western Region of NPMA and the Higher Education and Research Chapter Secretary. He has also served as a proctor and has held various positions at the Chapter Level. He currently is a Certification Instructor for NPMA and is working on developing additional courses of study, specific to Asset Management and Logistics. He recently received another opportunity in the teaching field, working for The Graduate School USA as a Faculty member, teaching and developing new Supply Management Courses for the School of Business Management specific to Federal Government employees and contractors.

He received the University “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2009 and the “Presidents Commendation Metal” in 2012 for excellence in the workplace. He also served as volunteer CSUEU Union President at the University for 17 years focused on solving workplace problems.

In his spare time, Frank enjoys spending time with his wife Rosemary of 40 years and his son Dominic, and daughter-in-law Addie, both graduates from CSU Stanislaus in 2017, each becoming High School Teachers in the local community.

An avid “Oakland” Athletics and Dallas Cowboys fan, Frank is very active in the local community, where he leads the Knights of Columbus Council focused on helping people in his church community. He recently served as President of the School Board at Central Catholic High School where he attended many, many moons ago.
